How Often Should You Use Beard Oil? Expert Tips Inside

If you have only just started to grow a beard, or it has only just reached the length and shape that you originally wanted, it can be something of a quandary as to what to do next. Beard grooming may never have been on your radar and maybe you are only just getting to grips with ‘any’ kind of male grooming. But you’ve probably noticed that hairs grow all over the male body, and some can become wildly adventurous, even overnight, and the beard is no different. It therefore needs looking after and beard oil is your friend in this regard. But what is it and how often do you need to use it?

Beard oil is probably the most important product in your grooming routine. Much like every DIY expert has their favourite tool that seems to do every job, beard oil is the go-to product that is essential for helping you grow, cultivate and maintain a healthy beard.

What is beard oil and why is it important?

It is a common mistake made by many men to wash their beard with regular hair shampoo, but this can strip the beard of its essential oils and can cause flaky skin – what we call beardruff and itchiness. This can become quite uncomfortable after a period of time, but beard oil replaces and maintains these essential oils and then maintains a healthy beard. It softens the hair and the skin, and reduces itchiness and beardruff so that your beard both feels better and looks better.

However, there is a concern about over-use of beard oil. Too much of a good thing can be bad for you, right? Well, sort of. It’s a case of using beard oil in moderation and monitoring what effect it is having, so let’s look at it in a bit more detail.

A regular beard oil routine according to the experts

There are different types of beard oil. A general beard oil is used for hydrating the skin and the beard and for styling, while there are other types which are specifically used for beard growth and which act to strengthen the hair follicles in order to cultivate a longer beard. You need to choose the type that suits you, but in most cases a general beard oil, such as the Korvak Beard Oil supplied by Darkside Grooming, will be sufficient and will tick every box on your grooming routine checklist.

A general beard oil should be applied every day to get the best results. It works to soften the beard and the skin, which prevents dryness and flakiness and makes the beard easier to manage, regardless of how long it is. Most people apply this in the morning when they have a shower, this is the optimum time for the beard to absorb the oil as it is clean, warm and moist. You can then shape and style it accordingly.

It is true that your application of beard oil might change with the weather. In colder conditions, and particularly if you are working outside all day, it won’t hurt to apply a little beard oil twice a day, in the morning as normal, and a little in the evenings. This helps replace essential oils and repair the dry skin that cold weather can create. The same applies if you live in a location with a very dry climate. However, it is important to note that you should keep a close eye on how your beard and skin reacts to this. It is something of a balancing act, and if your beard starts to get greasy or too shiny, you have overdone it, so either go back to once a day, or reduce the amount of oil you apply.

Expert tips for your beard grooming routine

  • Overuse of beard oil can start to clog your pores and irritate your skin, so it is a balancing act where you need to monitor your application and adjust it accordingly. As your beard gets longer it becomes harder for the beard oil to reach the skin. This is where you may need a larger application or a twice a day application, and as long as you closely monitor and react to the results, you shouldn’t go too far wrong.
  • Shorter beards naturally don’t need as much beard oil, so you don’t need to apply the same volume of oil in a morning. This stands to reason, and also means your bottle of beard oil lasts a bit longer.
  • Build-up your use of beard oil until it feels and looks right. Everybody’s skin is different and a slightly smaller or larger application of oil can have a big impact. Adjust the amount based on the length and feel of your beard until it feels just great

In conclusion, a daily application of beard oil should suit most beards, and in the morning while showering is best. But you should monitor the results and adjust the amount you use accordingly. In winter you might find your beard is dry and your skin more flaky, so it probably won’t hurt to make a second application in the evening, but keep an eye on it.
