7 Signs You’re Using the Wrong Beard Oil

When you decide to grow a beard, or to grow it longer, you aren’t expected to be an expert in skin science, facial hair growth and the effects of natural oils on the body. But these topics do combine to shape what kind of beard oil might be the most suitable for your beard. For this reason, it is quite common for people to choose the wrong type of beard oil. The result of this is a range of issues which can be uncomfortable to live with or can be dispiriting, in the sense that you are not getting the results that you want, and your beard isn’t as soft and resplendent as you expected it to be.

Beard oil has the purpose of nourishing, softening and strengthening the beard, and cleansing the skin underneath, and in the case of the range of beard oils offered by Darkside Grooming, the beard is hydrated by a range of natural oils, such as sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, wheat germ oil and argan oil. The job of beard oil is to deliver vitality and reduce greasiness, to leave you with a well-groomed beard, but we know that doesn’t always happen. Every beard is different in terms of length, hair thickness and skin type, and so a different type of beard oil may be suitable also, and it may be a case of trial and error before you find the most suitable one. In this article we have outlined seven common signs that you might be using the wrong type of beard oil.

1. Itchiness

Experiencing a persistent itch in your beard can be hugely frustrating and unpleasant, and this could be an allergic reaction to the ingredients in your beard oil, particularly if it is a poor quality beard oil that doesn’t use natural oils. Itchiness can also be caused by the beard oil clogging your pores or trapping dirt in your beard.

2. Developing acne

Another by-product of the wrong beard oil is that it causes acne on the skin, which is irritating and unpleasant, or it could cause a bigger inflammation of the skin. Again this is usually caused by the beard oil clogging your pores and not being the most suitable beard oil for your skin type.

3. Dry hair

A good quality beard oil will condition and soften your beard, but if your beard hair is left dry this could be because it is not absorbing the beard oil, or you are not using enough beard oil. Try to increase the quantity a little. If this has no effect you may be using the wrong type and can try an alternative beard oil

4. Flaky skin

This is the dreaded beardruff, which is dry and flaky skin from your face and neck which sits in your beard until you look in the mirror and get mightily embarrassed. Beardruff is caused because the underlying skin is dry and needs a more effective conditioning. It is important to note that beard oil is not just for your beard, it serves an important function in cleaning and nourishing the skin underneath your beard also.

5. The beard is greasy

If it feels like you have an oil slick on your face you could be using too much beard oil, or just as likely, the wrong type of beard oil. Some oils are heavier than others and hence may not be properly absorbed by your hair type. This doesn’t mean this beard oil isn’t suitable for someone else, but just means you might be better choosing a different beard oil

6. A lack of shine

Your beard should be looking natural and shiny when it is cleaned and conditioned with the right beard oil. If you are left a bit underwhelmed by the results, don’t necessarily lose faith with the product, you might just have the wrong type, and a different collection of natural oils might be better suited to your hair type. Keep trying and you will find the beard oil that gives you the shine appeal you are after.

7. Your beard is not growing

It is rare, but some beard oils can suppress hair growth because they are a poor quality beard oil that uses harsh chemical ingredients and synthetic fragrances. It might smell okay, but a lack of natural ingredients will do nothing for the health and vitality of your beard. A good quality beard oil with natural ingredients will promote beard growth and make it look fantastic too.
